Neuroanesthesiology Fellowship
Program Overview
The Neurosurgical Anesthesia program at UCLA is accepting applications for a flexible, one-year fellowship in neuroanesthesiology to interested graduating anesthesia residents, board-eligible anesthesiologists, and board-certified anesthesiologists. This program is designed to provide clinical subspecialty training while also affording opportunities for both clinical and laboratory research experience. The Fellowship Program Director is Natalie Moreland, MD.
As integral members of the Neurosurgical Anesthesia team, fellows will train in different hospital settings. Neurosurgical procedures include awake craniotomy, complex spine surgery, functional neurosurgery, and cerebrovascular treatment in the operating room and interventional radiology setting. Clinical training will also include rotations in neurophysiological monitoring, neurosurgical intensive care and neuroimaging. Experience in pediatric neuroanesthesia is offered in conjunction with the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia. The lengths of these rotations can be increased to accommodate specific interests.
Education for clinical fellows includes formal didactics, journal club, and simulation courses. Fellows will have the opportunity to function as junior attendings and actively participate in the resident education process.
Fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in clinical or laboratory research, with the goal of completing their projects by the end of the year and submitting the results for publication. Faculty interests include perioperative brain health, mechanisms of cerebral protection, sedation and consciousness.
Applicants must be able to obtain a California medical license prior to starting and are appointed as clinical instructors. This fellowship is structured to match the format suggested by the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC), and is accredited by the International Council on Perioperative Neuroscience Training (ICPNT). Further, we offer the opportunity to work as an attending physician, earning additional income, for one to two days per week.
