Westwood EEG & Epilepsy Training Track

John Stern MD, Jerome “Pete” Engel MD PhD, and Dawn Eliashiv MD are main preceptors for this track. Dr. Eliashiv oversees the continuous ICU EEG training and participates in the EMU training. Training lasts for two years. The first year is in the accredited PGY-5 Clinical Neurophysiology Training Program. The second year is in the accredited PGY-6 Epilepsy Training Program.

In a typical first year work week, the fellow participates in routine daily EEG readings for adult and pediatric routine inpatients and outpatients. The fellows also and interprets continuous adult ICU EEG monitoring. The fellow is assigned certain primary reading weeks with responsibility to review the EEGs and present them to a senior attending for confirmation prior to preparing the report.  

On some other weeks, the fellow participates in patient care on the UCLA inpatient Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.   Patient care on the Epilepsy Unit includes special procedures such as grid stimulation and depth electrode recordings.  

Fellows care for epilepsy patients in the Westwood Neurology Clinic two half-days each week. Fellows may participate in research. The fellow is on-call from home one week out of every three. This covers problems with patients on the inpatient Epilepsy Monitoring Unit as well as stat EEG requests or off-hours procedures. EEG can be read on-line from off site. Fellows train in IOM during some weeks.
