Dr. Husein's Pathway:
Where were you born and raised? What is your favorite part of your hometown?
I was born in Toronto, Canada, and grew up in the Greater Toronto Area with my loving and supportive family. Toronto has so much to offer, but what I love most is its incredible diversity. The city is a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and cuisines, with each neighborhood offering its own unique vibe, history, and community spirit. This makes exploring Toronto an endlessly fascinating and enriching experience.
What inspired you to choose neurology as your specialty, and how did UCLA’s program align with your goals?
Neurology captivated me early on with its complexity and the opportunity to make a profound impact on patients' lives. The intricate workings of the nervous system, along with the challenge of diagnosing and treating neurological disorders, drew me to this specialty. UCLA’s program stood out for its strong emphasis on both clinical excellence and research innovation. What truly impressed me was the department’s commitment to nurturing our greatest qualities and helping us become the best versions of ourselves. The program's supportive environment, diverse patient population, and access to cutting-edge technology perfectly aligned with my goal of becoming a well-rounded neurologist while contributing to advancements in the field.
What is an influential moment you’ve experienced as a trainee? How has this motivated you in your residency?
One of the most influential moments I’ve experienced as a trainee isn’t tied to a single event but rather to the daily interactions I have with my patients. The trust that patients and their families place in me is profoundly impactful. Every day, I am reminded of the immense responsibility and privilege that comes with being a physician. These interactions reinforce my sense of purpose and motivate me to continually hone my skills as a clinician. Knowing that my abilities directly impact the lives of those who entrust me with their care drives me to be the best neurologist I can be, so I can better serve my community and meet the needs of my patients.
I’m also deeply motivated by my family, who have always instilled in me the importance of caring for and supporting others. Growing up, I was taught the value of close relationships and the significance of being there for those around you. This upbringing has shaped my approach to medicine, reinforcing my commitment to building strong, trusting relationships with my patients and their families. My family’s values continue to inspire me every day, reminding me of the importance of empathy, connection, and dedication in my role as a physician.
What are some of the most valuable skills or knowledge areas that you feel you have developed during your time at UCLA?
During my time at UCLA, I’ve developed several valuable skills and knowledge areas that have been crucial to my growth as a neurologist. Clinically, I’ve gained a deep understanding of neurological diseases and sharpened my diagnostic and treatment skills through hands-on experience with a diverse patient population. I’ve also honed my ability to think critically and problem-solve in high-pressure situations, which is essential in neurology.
Additionally, I’ve built a strong foundation in clinician education, learning how to effectively teach and mentor medical students and residents. UCLA’s emphasis on education has allowed me to develop the skills necessary to communicate complex neurological concepts clearly, design engaging educational experiences, and foster a supportive learning environment. These experiences have not only enhanced my teaching abilities but also reinforced the importance of continuous learning and growth as a clinician educator.
What advice would you give to someone interested in neurology?
For someone interested in neurology, my advice is to embrace curiosity and patience. Neurology is a complex and ever-evolving field that requires a deep understanding of both the science and the art of medicine. Dive into the intricacies of the brain and nervous system with an open mind, and don’t hesitate to ask questions, even when the answers aren’t immediately clear.
When exploring neurology—or any field in medicine—my biggest piece of advice is to reach out and speak to as many people in the field as possible. Gather all the information you can about the nuances of the specialty, what your life will look like, and how those unique aspects align with your interests and career goals. Clinical exposure is key, so seek out opportunities to work with patients early on to develop your diagnostic skills and gain hands-on experience. Finally, find mentors who inspire you and who can guide you through the challenges and opportunities that come with this specialty. The journey in neurology is rewarding, but it’s your passion for learning and commitment to patient care that will drive your success.
What is a professional goal that you are working towards now?
A professional goal I’m currently working towards is becoming a well-rounded clinical neurologist with specialized interests in neurophysiology and headache/pain management. I’m focused on honing my clinical skills in these areas to provide comprehensive care to my patients. Additionally, I’m deeply involved in medical education initiatives aimed at increasing the accessibility of neurology to undifferentiated students and enhancing the educational experience of neurology residents. My goal is to contribute to the field not only through patient care but also by inspiring and educating the next generation of neurologists.
How do you spend your time outside of work? What is your favorite hobby?
Outside of work, I make it a priority to explore all that Southern California has to offer. Since moving to LA a few years ago, I’ve incorporated regular beach days and hikes into my routine, always on the lookout for the best sunset spots. I’m also a theater buff, and LA’s vibrant comedy and improvisation scene is something I really enjoy. In addition, I love exploring the city’s rich and diverse food scene, always trying to find new and exciting places to eat. These activities help me stay balanced and connected to the incredible community and environment around me.
