Kara's Pathway:

Where were you born and raised? What is your favorite part of your hometown?
I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, and there is so much I love about it. My favorite parts include the diverse food scene and the beautiful hiking trails that offer a perfect escape into nature. Despite its size, the Valley has a strong sense of community, with tight-knit neighborhoods where people look out for each other. It’s a unique place that blends culture, history, and a laid-back charm—one of the many reasons I’m proud to call it my hometown!
What are some influential moments in your career journey? How did these help you get to where you are today?
The most influential moment in my career journey came after I earned my Master’s degree. My mentor encouraged me to apply for the Clinical Exercise Specialist position at the Marilyn Hilton MS Achievement Center at UCLA, as my research focused on exercise and its impact on multiple sclerosis. I was honored to accept the role, but after two years, I relocated to the East Coast. For the next ten years, I worked at the University of Pittsburgh, managing NIH-funded stroke research studies. This experience allowed me to develop valuable managerial and administrative skills. When I returned home to California, I discovered that my dream job at the MS Achievement Center was vacant. I reapplied for the Clinical Exercise Specialist position and was thrilled to return to the Center. However, my ultimate career goal was to manage a wellness center, so when the Executive Director position became available, I felt compelled to apply. Looking back, I realize that every role I held prepared me for this position. I am truly honored to be where I am today, serving and supporting those living with MS.

What motivates you in your work in the MS Achievement Center?
My motivation to work at the MS Achievement Center stems from my passion for helping individuals living with multiple sclerosis improve their quality of life through exercise and wellness. My academic background and research focused on the impact of exercise on MS, and I was eager to apply my knowledge in a meaningful, hands-on way. Beyond the science, I am deeply inspired by the resilience and strength of the MS community. Working at the Center allows me to empower individuals through specialized exercise programs, provide education, and foster a supportive environment that enhances their overall well-being. Additionally, the opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary team committed to innovative wellness interventions aligns perfectly with my professional goals. The MS Achievement Center is a place where I can make a real impact, and that is what drives my dedication to this work every day. The MS Achievement Center is more than just a workplace—it’s a family and my home away from home. The supportive and compassionate environment fosters deep connections between staff and members, creating a true sense of community. Seeing the resilience, strength, and determination of those living with MS inspires me every day, and I feel privileged to be part of their journey. This Center is a place where lives are enriched, friendships are formed, and positive change happens. I am truly honored to call it my second home.

What is your favorite part of working with members at the MSAC?
My favorite part of working with the members at the Center is building meaningful relationships and witnessing their resilience and progress. It’s incredibly rewarding to see members gain strength, confidence, and a sense of empowerment through our wellness programs. The Center is more than just a place for exercise and wellness interventions, it is a community where laughter, support, and encouragement thrive. Being part of their journey, celebrating their achievements, and creating a positive impact in their lives is what makes this work so fulfilling.
What are your goals for the MSAC in the next couple of years?
My goals for the MSAC in the next couple of years include developing and implementing new wellness programs tailored to the evolving needs of individuals living with MS. I also aim to expand educational workshops, guest speakers, and peer support opportunities to foster a more informed and connected community. Enhancing outreach efforts is a key priority to ensure more individuals with MS can benefit from our programs. Additionally, I am committed to building a strong, multidisciplinary team to provide the highest level of care and expertise. Increasing the Center’s visibility through strategic outreach, social media, and community events will further strengthen our impact. Ultimately, my vision is for the MS Achievement Center to remain a beacon of hope, empowerment, and innovation, equipping individuals with MS with the tools and support they need to live their best lives.

How do you spend your time outside of work? What is your favorite hobby?
Outside of work, I prioritize spending quality time with my family, creating lasting memories together. One of my favorite things to do is take my 6-year-old to the park, where we play sports and cherish special moments together. In addition to family time, my personal passions include staying active through exercise, hiking and biking the scenic trails in Santa Clarita. I love combining my love for the outdoors with family activities, whether it’s discovering new trails, exploring bike paths, or simply embracing the peace of nature.
