Health Care Equity Strategy
UCLA Health prides itself on being an accredited leader in health care equity in alignment with the federal and state credentialing institutions. Our priorities include:
- Leadership — We designate a health care equity leader and list health care equity as a strategic priority.
- Collaboration — We work in partnership with patients, families, caregivers, and community organizations to support health care equity.
- Data Collection — We collect self-reported data from patients, staff, and leaders, and review data about the communities we serve to improve health care equity.
- Provision of Care — We ensure a workplace free from discrimination, support our staff in the delivery of equitable patient care, and ensure the provision of equitable patient care includes patients impacted by disabilities and health-related social needs.
- Performance Improvement — We analyze our data to identify opportunities to improve the provision of equitable patient care, including prioritizing at least three disparities to address.
We center our health care equity efforts on improving patient access, quality and outcomes, and strategic planning. We collect detailed information about patient demographics and social drivers of health. UCLA Health hospitals assess our performance on key care processes, clinical outcomes, and patient experience, for all patients overall, as well as for various demographic groups and populations, to make sure that all patients are experiencing the best health care. We develop plans to prioritize and implement efforts to mitigate disparities as inequities are identified.

UCLA Health continues to ensure we comply with federal laws, state laws, University of California polices, and UCLA policies concerning protections under and , and , the , , the , the , the , the , the , and equal employment opportunity and affirmative action obligations.
The Office of Health Equity and Inclusive Excellence partners with Legal, Human Resources, Quality and Safety, DGSOM Office of Inclusive Excellence, and the UCLA Civil Rights Office (Title IX, Staff Diversity and Compliance, and Discrimination Prevention Office) to prevent, mitigate, and address discriminatory conduct.
The reporting form is a civil rights reporting page for all individuals (complainants, mandatory reporters, and third=party observers) who want to report an incident of discrimination or harassment.
Toolkits
What’s in the HEDI Toolkit?
The HEDI toolkit consists of selected readings, videos and discussion questions. It is designed to:
- Encourage individual self-reflection
- Guide group discussions
- Inspire collective action
The content will increase your understanding and awareness of racism, bias, health inequities and social injustices while promoting anti-racism principles and practices.
We hope you will use this toolkit to ensure equitable treatment and outcomes for your patients while celebrating diversity and creating a sense of belonging for all staff and patients.
How do I use the toolkit?
The toolkit can be used as a guide for individual and/or group directed learning. It is not meant to serve as formal UCLA Hospital and Clinic System EDI training. Formal EDI and anti-racism training will be implemented for all UCLA Hospital and Clinic System leaders and staff.
While this toolkit will assist in increasing awareness of racism, bias, health inequities and social injustices, transforming into an individual or organization that upholds anti-racism and anti-bias principles requires time, persistence and intentional action.
