Photodynamic Therapy
At UCLA Dermatology, we use photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat precancerous growths and nonmelanoma skin cancer. Our physicians can perform this light-based treatment in their offices.
Our specialists apply a photosensitizing agent to the skin on and around the growth. As the agent soaks into the tissue, it is absorbed into rapidly dividing, precancerous or cancerous cells. Your physician then activates the agent by exposing it to a special blue light, stimulating the topical agent to destroy tissue in that specific area. PDT safely and effectively shrinks or completely eliminates the precancerous or cancerous growths.
