Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
The Attending Medical Staff shall consist of faculty members of the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine or the School of Dentistry, University of California, Los Angeles, who admit, treat, or otherwise provide services to patients in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Medical Center licensed clinic, or some other affiliated healthcare facility where credentialing and performance improvement/patient safety data are readily accessible for evaluation of clinical competence.
The Associate Attending Medical Staff shall consist of practitioners who meet all of the qualifications for the Attending staff, but have not attained American Board certification in their primary specialty, or its equivalent.
The Courtesy Medical Staff shall consist of practitioners who do not have faculty appointments at UCLA, but admit, treat, or otherwise provide services to patients in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and/or Medical Center licensed clinic, and otherwise meet all Medical Staff Bylaw requirements unrelated to faculty responsibilities. Members of the Courtesy Staff must have attained American Board specialty certification or its equivalent upon application. Members of the Courtesy Staff must be Active, not provisional, Staff members in good standing at another accredited healthcare facility that will provide credentialing and performance improvement/patient safety data necessary for documentation of current clinical competence.
The UCLA Community Practice Physician category shall consist of licensed physicians who hold faculty appointments in the David Geffen School of Medicine, are employed by UCLA, are members of the UCLA Medical Group, and who do not have medical staff privileges at any of the three UCLA-owned hospitals.
The Consultant Medical Staff shall be limited to practitioners who serve only as consultants in their specialty field, and for whom there is a programmatic need within their Clinical Service. Members of the Consultant Staff must be Active Staff members in good standing at another accredited healthcare facility that will provide credentialing and performance improvement/patient safety data necessary for documentation of current clinical competence.
The Teaching Only Medical Staff shall consist of those UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine faculty members who volunteer their clinical skills only for teaching in Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center or Medical Center licensed clinic, and are not remunerated for patient care or professional activities at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
Administrative Staff membership shall be open to any physician, dentist or podiatrist who is clinically inactive within the Medical Center, but is retained by the Clinical Service to perform ongoing administrative activities related to performance improvement and patient safety.
UCLA Health Santa Monica Medical Center
The Active Staff shall consist exclusively of Medical Staff members who regularly care for patients in the Medical Center, as determined by the Medical Staff through service specific criteria.
The Consultant Staff shall be limited to practitioners who serve only as consultants in their service, and for whom there is a programmatic need within their Clinical Service determined by the Service Chief. Members of the Consultant Staff must be Active members in good standing at another California-licensed hospital that will provide credentialing and quality assurance data necessary for documentation of current clinical competence. Consultant Staff may perform procedures appropriate to their approved clinical privileges, consult on patients, and write progress notes and write orders.
The Courtesy Staff shall consist of Medical Staff members who have satisfactorily completed Provisional Staff requirements and who do not regularly care for patients in the Medical Center or are not regularly involved in Medical Staff functions as determined by the Medical Staff through service-specific rules and regulations. The Courtesy Staff member may be granted clinical privileges based upon documentation of training and experience. Appointment shall be based upon standards to evaluate current clinical competence as determined by the member’s service, and may include a review of office records. Courtesy Staff members shall be members in good standing of the Active medical staff of another California-licensed hospital.
Administrative Staff membership shall be open to any physician, dentist or podiatrist who is clinically inactive within the Medical Center, but is retained by the Service or Medical Center to perform ongoing administrative activities related to performance improvement and patient safety.
The Emeritus Staff shall consist of former Medical Staff members who are retired from medical practice and who are honored for their past service by this appointment. These are members who have had ten (10) years or more of service on the Active Staff and have outstanding academic or professional reputations with a record of exemplary service to the Medical Center.
To be considered for the Emeritus Staff, a retired member must be nominated, in writing, by a current member of the Active Staff. Additional support by other members of the Active Staff is encouraged. As this staff category is honorific with no patient care privileges, the nomination will be forwarded directly to the MSEC for consideration for appointment.
UCLA West Valley Medical Center
The Active Staff shall consist of Practitioners who have offices and residences which, in the opinion of the MEC, are located closely enough to the hospital to provide appropriate continuity of care. Active Staff have provided direct patient care services to at least twenty (20) unique patients at the Hospital in the last two (2) years.
Primary Care Active Staff shall consist of Practitioners who hold privileges in the specialties of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Pediatrics. Primary Care Active Staff practice in the local community with a focus on outpatient primary care treatment and management and treat at least 500 outpatient primary care patients every two (2) years.
Members In Good Standing of the active medical staff of another accredited or CMS certified hospital and have been involved in at least twenty (20) documented unique patient care activities at that accredited or CMS certified hospital in the preceding two (2) years. Have provided direct patient care to at least four (4) but fewer than twenty (20) unique patients at the Hospital in the last two (2) years.
Any Member of the Medical Staff In Good Standing may consult in his or her area of expertise. Are involved in at least two (2) direct unique patient care activities at the Hospital per two (2) year period. Are willing and able to come to the Hospital on schedule or promptly respond when called to render clinical services within their area of competence. Are able to demonstrate their current competency directly related to the privileges requested and types of clinical services provided at the Hospital through documented hospital inpatient or at least two hundred and fifty (250) outpatient clinical activities in their specialty in the last two (2) years.
Practitioners holding privileges in other categories of membership may utilize available Hospital telemedicine equipment and links as clinically indicated. Do not have physical in‐person contact with any Hospital patients, but rather require Medical Staff membership and telemedicine privileges to provide diagnostic and/or consultative services to Hospital patients via telemedicine technology and devices. Provided telemedicine services to at least four (4) unique Hospital patients in the last two (2) years.
All Practitioners applying for initial appointment to the Medical Staff and requesting privileges, except those requesting Affiliate or Administrative Staff Category and those requesting temporary privileges, shall be appointed to the Provisional Staff for a period of at least one (1) year. At the time of appointment, an applicant shall list their intended category of membership following Provisional Staff membership. If applying for admitting/attending privileges without consultation, have provided direct patient care to at least twenty (20) unique patients at an accredited or CMS certified hospital in the last two (2) years. If applying for admitting/attending privileges with consultation (Primary Care Active Staff Category), have provided direct patient care to at least ten (10) unique patients, at an accredited or CMS certified hospital in the last two (2) years.
The Emeritus Staff shall consist of Physicians, dentists, and podiatrists who have been members of the Active Medical Staff for no less than twenty‐five (25) years, do not actively practice at the Hospital, and continue to adhere to appropriate professional and ethical standards.
Administrative Staff category membership shall be held by any physician who is not currently a Medical Staff member in another staff category and who is retained by the Hospital or Medical Staff solely to perform ongoing medical administrative activities including but not limited to quality assessment, peer review, ongoing professional practice evaluation, performance improvement, focused professional practice evaluation, and utilization review.
Practitioners may be transferred to the Affiliate Staff Category from another staff category but may also apply directly to the Affiliate Staff Category for initial appointment. Practitioners who apply directly to the Affiliate Staff Category are not assigned to the Provisional Staff Category and are in an active practice in the local community with a focus on outpatient treatment and management and treat at least 500 outpatients a year in their office.
Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital
Faculty members UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine who regularly admit, treat, or otherwise provide services to six (6) or more patients per year in the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, licensed clinics, or some other affiliated healthcare facility where credentialing and performance improvement/patient safety data are readily accessible for evaluation of clinical competence.
Faculty members of the UCLA Psychology Department who are regularly involved in the care of six (6) or more patients per year in the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, licensed clinics, or some other affiliated healthcare facility where credentialing and performance improvement/patient safety data are readily accessible for evaluation of clinical competence.
Practitioners who are willing and able to come to the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital on schedule or promptly respond when called to render clinical services within their area of competence. The Consultant Staff are members in good standing of the Associate and Attending Medical Staff category of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center that will provide credentialing and performance improvement/patient safety data necessary for documentation of current clinical competence.
Practitioners who may not have faculty appointments at UCLA, but may admit (MDs only), treat, or otherwise provide services to less than six (6) patients per year in the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, licensed clinics, or some other affiliated healthcare facility where credentialing and performance improvement/patient safety data are readily accessible for evaluation of clinical competence. Members of the Courtesy Staff must be Active, not provisional, Staff members in good standing at another accredited healthcare facility.
UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and UCLA Department of Psychology faculty members who volunteer their clinical skills only for teaching in the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital or Hospital licensed clinic, and are not remunerated for patient care or professional activities at Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. Teaching Only members may treat hospital and clinic patients only when incident to performing clinical teaching responsibilities. The Professional Staff appointment in this category ceases when the faculty appointment is terminated.
Administrative Staff membership shall be open to any physician or clinical psychologist who is clinically inactive within the Hospital, but is retained by the Clinical Service to perform ongoing administrative activities related to performance improvement and patient safety. Administrative Staff shall be considered for appointment only upon recommendation of the Service Chief.
