Adult Psychiatry
Welcome to 4 East Adult Psychiatry
The Inpatient Service is comprised of a 24-bed inpatient care unit, which has as its objective the provision of inpatient psychiatric services to adult patients who are hospitalized for the diagnosis and treatment of major psychiatric illnesses. The unit accepts patients admitted under the care of psychiatrists on either a voluntary of involuntary basis. The inpatient unit is divided into three neighborhoods, A, B and C. The C neighborhood is for patients who require intensive nursing care and treatment due to severely disorganized, disoriented or agitated states. The A and B neighborhoods care for acutely ill adults who require routine nursing care for the treatment of their primary psychiatric illness and any secondary substance abuse issues. The treatment team for the adult inpatient unit consists of the expertise of psychiatric physicians, medical specialists, psychologists, clinical social workers, nursing staff and occupational therapists and provides a structured program of groups and activities focused on helping patients recover from their illnesses and lead a full and productive life.
Services include appropriate therapeutic environments with a wide variety of therapeutic modalities, including diagnosis, evaluation, psychological, medical and neuropsychological assessment, individual, group and family psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and behavioral treatments. Electroconvulsive therapy is provided when indicated. The focus is on stabilizations of symptoms, early intervention and re-entry to the community with arrangements for continuity of care with outpatient or partial hospitalization referrals.
For those individuals who may require a longer stay in a residential treatment program, the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital (RNPH) is able to coordinate treatment using a comprehensive set of residential and partial hospitalization treatment options.
When entering the hospital, patients and their families find themselves facing an unfamiliar world. Despite this, we find that most patients adjust within a short period of time. The staff is here to help with any questions that may arise and to help the patient feel welcome on admission. Upon arrival, the patient will be given a welcome packet which gives specific information about the In-patient unit, the therapeutic program, resources, and other important information such as visiting hours, telephone numbers, and billing services.
The RNPH goal is to provide the patient with the highest possible quality of care while hospitalized. This includes evaluation, treatment, and discharge planning. At the end of the hospitalization, please complete a survey regarding the hospital stay. We encourage your feedback and suggestions. This packet is designed to educate the patient and their families about the hospital stay. The hope is that this hospitalization is a productive experience.
