Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Welcome to 4 West Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

4-West is a short-term, secure setting serving adolescents and children who require the highest level of treatment for psychiatric disorders, including but not limited to: psychotic disorders, affective disorders, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders.
The average length of stay varies from several days to a few weeks, depending on the goals of hospitalization. The unit program is organized to provide a well-structured, protective, nurturing, and stimulating environment.
4-West takes a holistic approach, emphasizing a behavioral milieu and utilizing positive reinforcement as a core principle. Patients interact with staff and peers, fostering socialization and a sense of community. Additionally, patients participate in individual therapy sessions and therapeutic group activities.
The unit staff consists of a multidisciplinary team consisting of child psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing staff, social workers, occupational and recreational therapists, educational consultants, and a dietician.
As the inpatient setting is the highest level of care offered, the goal for each patient is to step down to a lower level of care. Throughout hospitalization, the team will work with each patient and family to identify the next level of care and will assist in locating appropriate post-discharge services. The Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital provides an Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (APHP) and Child Day Program (ABC). In some cases, an adolescent or child may go from inpatient to APHP or to ABC to continue relevant hospital goals and facilitate transition home or placement.
