The Tarling-Vallim lab in the Division of Cardiology is recruiting for an Assistant Project Scientist position. This position is intended for collaborative research working on bile acid metabolism and cardiovascular biology. The Tarling/Vallim labs have pioneered the detection of bile acids in different tissues and sub-cellular compartments and the use of AAV-CRISPR/Cas9 to target bile acid enzymes in vivo.

Job responsibilities include supporting the PI in the design and execution of funded projects, including preparation of atherosclerotic aortas, bile acid extracts, and conducting CRISPR/Cas9- mediated gene editing studies using animal models. Responsibilities also include assisting the PI in study design, day-to-day tasks related to project management, data analysis, manuscript preparation and submission, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, as well as junior postdoctoral fellows within this group.

The qualifications for this position are as follows: a Ph.D. in Biosciences, Biochemistry, or a closely related field. Candidates must have experience in liquid and gas chromatography mass spectrometry, bile acid extraction, in vivo CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, dissection and quantification of atherosclerotic lesions, and have conducted pre-clinical animal studies.

The laboratory of Mario Deng, in the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA invites applications for an Adjunct Assistant Professor position. The incumbent will manage several research projects in heart failure and COVID-19 and also participate in biobank development and management. We a looking for a scientist to join an interdisciplinary team consisting of clinicians, scientists post docs, technicians, nurses, undergraduate and graduate students. The specialist will act as a liaison between academia and industry, and may serve as a consultant for the CareDx Inc. The candidate must possess an outstanding record of academic productivity, and a demonstrated commitment to education. The rank and salary shall be commensurate with prior experience. The successful candidate should be familiar with translation research. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent, along with fellowship CTRC training in a clinical research program.

Responsibilities will include: • Help to organize coordinate interrelated multiple projects (within US and internationally)

  • Work collaboratively, respectfully, and efficiently with students, researchers, clinicians and patients
  • Contribute to the development of efficient operational policies and procedures over a broad range of topics, including mission, space, finances and personnel management
  • Oversee the obtaining, processing, and analysis of all clinical data and biological samples
  • Provide ongoing quality assurance and technical documentation for the biobank development and management
  • Act as a liaison between academia and industry

The Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is seeking a candidate for a Project Scientist position at the Assistant, Associate and Full ranks to be based at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.

The candidate will work with Investigators in the UCLA Magnetic Resonance Research Laboratories (MRRL), the UCLA-VA Division of Cardiology, and the UCLA Diagnostic Cardiovascular Imaging Section of Radiology. Projects include: 1) developing and applying advanced cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging methods to detect and quantify indices of cardiovascular disease in human patients and animal models and 2) image-based computational modeling of the cardiovascular system. The projects are in the areas of ischemicreperfusion /hemorrhagic myocardial infarction and heart failure, ischemic microvascular heart disease, and congenital heart disease.

A Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment are expected. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Ph.D. candidates should hold a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Material Science, Physiology, or a closely related field. Desired skills include experience in MRI, Siemens IDEA and ICE programming, image reconstruction and processing, and cardiovascular disease research.

The candidate is expected to be proficient in MATLAB, C++, Python. Experience in computational modeling of the cardiovascular system and/or machine learning is also desired.

M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. candidates should have experience in cardiovascular MRI research and/or computational modeling (multiscale biology). Prior background in biostatistics is expected. Prior experience in cardiovascular interventional procedures and ischemic/infarct modeling in large animals is preferred. The candidate is expected to have prior first author publications.
