Municipal Solid Waste
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is composed of everyday items we throw away. MSW consists of landfill, recycling, and compost. At UCLA Health, employees, patrons, and guests are provided the appropriate bins for the everyday waste streams. UCLA Health Sustainability has provided resources and information to help community members properly sort their waste.
Universal Waste
Universal waste is a sub-category of hazardous waste, and must be properly disposed. Under California regulation, items in the universal waste category cannot be disposed in the compost, recycling, or landfill waste streams due to the presence of mercury, lead, cadmium or other substances harmful to the environment and human health.
Specialty Recycling
Some materials do not fit in the typical waste bin and are not considered universal or hazardous waste. UCLA Health provides options to recycle the materials listed below.
