Neurophysiology
The UCLA Clinical Neurophysiology Program offers one- and two-year fellowships in clinical neurophysiology. The program is separated into four tracks, each one with a different emphasis, flexibility, and duration. In a typical year, six first-year positions are available.
Training emphasizes clinical study in EEG and Intraoperative Monitoring. One track also offers clinical training in EMG. Training also includes evoked potentials, video-EEG monitoring, ICU EEG monitoring and other clinical neurophysiology
techniques.
EPILEPSY: Two two-year positions emphasize EEG, video-EEG inpatient monitoring, epilepsy surgery and epilepsy clinic. Applicants should apply directly to John Stern and Jerome Engel, MD, PhD.
PEDIATRIC EPILEPSY: One two-year position is for child neurologists interested in EEG, pediatric video-EEG inpatient monitoring, epilepsy surgery, pediatric epilepsy clinic, and intraoperative and ICU EEG monitoring. EEG training is both for adult and pediatric EEG. Applicants should apply directly to Joyce Matsumoto, MD and Marc Nuwer MD, PhD.
WEST LA VA: One two-year position rotates between UCLA Westwood and the West LA VA. The second year specializes in epilepsy. Training includes EEG, intraoperative monitoring, and video-EEG monitoring. The training is tailored to the needs of the individual trainee. Applicants should apply directly to Marc Nuwer, MD, PhD.
CEDARS SINAI: Two one-year positions are based at nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Part of the training is at UCLA in Westwood. These positions train in EEG, EMG, and intraoperative and ICU EEG Monitoring. Applicants should apply directly to Jeffrey Chung, MD and Marc Nuwer, MD, PhD.
INTRAOPERATIVE NEUROPHYSIOLOGIC MONITORING (IONM): One two-year position rotates between UCLA Westwood and the West LA VA. The second year specializes in intraoperative monitoring. Training includes EEG, intraoperative monitoring, and video-EEG monitoring. The fellow monitors over seven hundred IONM cases, both at our major university hospital in Westwood and telemonitoring remotely for cases at our Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center campus and two regional community hospitals. This includes time in the operating rooms participating and understanding how procedures are performed and interpreted in neurosurgery, orthopedics, cardiothoracic, vascular, head and neck, and other disciplines. This is one of the few IOM fellowships available in the United States and our fellows are highly sought after for positions once they have completed the fellowship. We take great pride in tailoring our program to the specific needs and goals of each young physician. This training program overall has successfully prepared many physician neurophysiologists for a career at universities or at national IONM companies. Applicants should apply directly to Marc Nuwer, MD, PhD.
Depending on their training specialties, fellows become eligible for certification by the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG) and/or the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (EMG). All fellows are expected to take the examination in Clinical Neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Fellows share the daily reading of routine EEG records and share in weekend and evening EEG call from home (EEGs can be read remotely) in a 1 week in 3 call schedule. Fellows provide patient care on the inpatient video-EEG unit service and in outpatient clinics.
Fellows also participate in a didactic lecture series about clinical neurophysiology and related clinical disorders. The busy training rewards the fellow with intensive learning experiences, leading to expertise in a wide range of clinical techniques in clinical neurophysiology. Some research opportunities are available.
Applicants must have completed an ACGME internship in medicine or pediatrics and residency in neurology or child neurology, and be eligible for an unrestricted California medical license. Usually applicants are selected at least 15 months before the starting date.
