Research
UCLA General Surgery residents are encouraged to push creative boundaries and pursue their passions. Residents typically spend two dedicated years between their junior and senior years working on research projects and professional development activities. In recent years, residents have joined basic and translational since research laboratories, conducted high-impact health policy and health services research, obtained masters degrees and PhDs, carried out field research in international settings, and worked with the NIH and World Bank (among other organizations). As a program, we are committed to supporting residents who take surgical research in new directions, recognizing the need for fresh ideas and perspectives in our field. As the top public education institution in the country, UCLA offers unparalleled opportunities for collaboration with world-renown scientists, engineers, public health researchers, and other experts across disciplines.
